Confirm who is hiring
Identify the employer's legal or trading name. Find its official website independently and compare the listing's email domain, phone number, and application link with public contact information.
A logo, social profile, or familiar company name is not enough by itself. Accounts and listings can be copied or impersonated.
Define the responsibilities
Look for specific tasks, required skills, tools, reporting relationships, expected availability, location restrictions, and equipment requirements.
Pause if the role remains vague after reasonable questions or if the work described changes during the conversation.
Understand the terms
- How compensation is calculated and when it is paid
- Whether the arrangement is employment or independent-contract work
- Who pays approved business expenses
- What schedule, time-zone, or response-time requirements apply
- What records or tax documents may be provided
Do not treat a headline rate or broad income estimate as a guarantee.
Check the application channel
Use the employer's verified career page or a recognized platform whenever possible. Be cautious if the entire process moves immediately to a private messaging account with no traceable company contact.
A legitimate process can vary, but the employer should be able to explain who is communicating, what happens next, and how information will be handled.
Limit personal information
Early screening usually should not require payments, banking credentials, account passwords, verification codes, or unnecessary identity documents. Ask why information is needed, how it will be protected, and whether it can be provided later through a secure verified process.
Keep your own record
Save the original listing, employer details, written terms, and relevant messages. If key information changes, pause and verify again before continuing.
